You may have already discovered that the more your back link is in context, the better it is for getting visitors and search engine optimization/results. Also, we're talking about Google and Google PageRank right?
So, generally, the following links strategies might be considered as 'beneficial', and listed in the order below:
- Best Back Link?: A link from another website's home page
- Better Back Link: Content Linking - a page on another site dedicated to your product or service with link(s) pointing back to your site
- Medium Back Link: Link on a ‘non-links’ page (i.e. a link at the bottom of a page NOT dedicated to links)
- Medium Back Link: Links Pages - your link amongst others on a page of RELEVANT links
- Worst Back Link?: Automated Linking Strategies - sometimes you don't have control over how/where your link is displayed.
You may adopt the following attitude and spend effort accordingly: The more difficult a back link is to obtain, the more it is likely to be worth.
What ever you decide, good luck with your back linking, because I'll tell you for nothing: it's not easy to get good back links! I'm not telling you anything new right? You should also keep in mind that Google PageRank does not directly relate to where you appear in the organic results.
Just carry out good back linking for real visitors and the search engines will fall into line!

I agree with everything here, but what do you think about asking other sites to link to you when they are re-using your content. You mention this in your post, but I'm interested in your feedback on how to ask.
We're soliciting testers for a service that does the above with email - lots of potential abuse, but it seems to take a lot of the hassle out of the equation.
To be honest Rich, it just depends on the content that is used on the other site - if it's a reciprocal link, then you can both decide what you are happy to link with - however, if it'sa one way link, then some negotiation is required.
The idea is to get link(s) in context to your site - so the more the adjacent content is in context the better.
And regarding a service that does that, good luck with it - seeing as it is a pain to do, you might just have found a niche!
I have a website that I started in May 2008, so I am fairly new to SEO.
I am also UK based, so the site is a .co.uk, and is in a very competitive UK market. I have been trying to get quality links from relevant sites, and 'chip' away at doing this every day (must get a life!). Rankings for MSN and Yahoo (.co.uk) are good - 5 and 8 respectively, for what it is worth. The ranking for Google is at the moment anywhere between 68 and 71 (mmm, OK). But what I don't understand is that the number of links the search engines record for my site fluctuate up and down? Can anyone shed any light on why this would be?

Thanks for the information. It's really a very informative and innovative post.Keep it up.Keep blogging.
we have found loads of businesses asking to exchange links with our sites and we have done in the past, now found that the reciprocal links dont count for much. Also gone back through some of the links requested to find they have deleted ours and so have a one way link so just beware people :)
Sometimes people who link to you can just remove your links without telling you, also, some change your link to add the "no follow" which means they don't actually link to your site. So that could be why your links registered may change downwards in number.
